Heart disease in women

As clinicians, we have always known that heart disease presents and behaves differently in women compared to men. But the current tools and tests for assessing and measuring risk factors do not distinguish between the sexes, and have thus far been regarded as general guide only. A new study from the Memorial Care Heart and Vascular Institute in Fountain Valley, California has for the first time identified and quantified some measurable differences in the biomarkers that may put women at greater risk than men for cardiovascular disease. The study findings confirm that atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease and that being […]

Diabetes Alert!

Diabetes rates worldwide are increasing rapidly, to the point of being declared an epidemic. The basic problem in diabetes is that your body loses its ability to control levels of blood sugar (glucose) within a safe range. It is called a safe range because excess glucose is a highly toxic substance, and excess blood and tissue levels eventually lead to life-changing complications. The vast majority – more than 90% – of all diabetes is the type 2, (DM2) which can take years 10-15 years to develop: during that time, you may be totally unaware of symptoms, until the DM2 has caused […]

CARRIE FISHER – SUDDEN DEATH LINKED TO MAGNESIUM?

The actress Carrie Fisher stopped breathing whilst travelling by air: after resuscitation and transfer to a hospital, where she died a few days later, never having regained consciousness. The death certificate states that the cause of death was “cardiac arrest/deferred”, meaning that they do not know what caused the cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest means that the heart stops beating, due to an electrical malfunction. This means that no blood is pumped to the lungs, brain and other organs; the patient becomes unconscious and pulseless and can die within minutes unless treatment is started immediately. A heart attack on the other hand, […]

Arthritis drug boosts effectiveness of anti-depressant medication

The findings of an eight-week study were recently presented at the Fifth International Congress on Psychiatry and the Neurosciences in Athens, Greece. The study involved severely depressed bipolar patients who seemed resistant to treatment. It is known that chronic pain is associated with a degree of depression, and that adding certain anti-depressants to the regime of pain management for many patients can significantly improve their pain levels and/or pain tolerance. This new report has looked at a novel application on the combination of anti-inflammatories and anti-depressants. Anti-depressants can often take four to six weeks to make an appreciable difference, and this may […]

Recipe makeovers: 5 tips for healthier dishes

Give your favourite dishes a healthy overhaul with these simple suggestions. Don’t deny yourself your favourite traditional recipes – just make them with healthier choices without ruining the flavour and appeal. Here are some tips from Mayo Clinic to help you convert your favourite recipes so that you can still enjoy them from time to time without health consequences or feeling guilty. Reduce the amount of fat, sugar and salt without affecting flavour: Baking: substitute half the fat with unsweetened applesauce, mashed banana or prune puree. Cut the sugar by 1/3 to ½, use sugar substitutes, and add spices or flavourings […]
